WhatsApp: WhatsApp continuously brings new features for its users and now WhatsApp has brought another useful feature. WhatsApp has launched the Voice Message Transcripts feature, which allows users to read voice messages in text format without listening to them. This is a very useful feature. This feature is very helpful in situations when you are in a noisy place and it is difficult to hear voice messages, in a meeting or class and it is not possible to hear the audio. Or you may not have earphones or you may be talking to someone who has trouble hearing.

According to WhatsApp, the entire transcription process happens on your device itself and this means that the voice message remains end-to-end encrypted. Obviously WhatsApp or any third party cannot access your audio or transcript. This feature is available on both Android and iOS platforms.

How does this feature work?

This feature converts what is said in a voice message into text that you can read right below the audio message.

How to turn on and use the feature?

This feature is usually optional so it may have to be turned on manually, understand here how you can turn on this feature on your phone-

  • Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  • Tap Chats.
  • Scroll down and turn on Voice Message Transcripts.
  • You can choose the transcription language of your choice.
  • Now whenever you get a voice message, tap and hold on it i.e. long press.
  • Select the Transcribe option in the menu that appears.
  • Within a few seconds, the text of the voice message will appear below your message.
  • You can also expand or collapse this message.

Note that this feature was initially available only in some languages like English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian but it is gradually being rolled out for other languages including Hindi. If a transcript does not appear, the voice message language may not be supported or there may be too much background noise. For iPhone users, arrangements are being made so that this feature can support many more languages in iOS 16 and 17.
