The Department of Telecommunications has recently issued a notification amending the Telecom Cyber Security (TCS) Rules, 2024. This has been done to strengthen cyber security in the country. Mobile Number Validation (MNV) has also been added to this rule, which is the first change made in it. What is mobile number validation?
As the name suggests, in mobile number validation, users have to verify that the mobile number used in any platform or bank is theirs. At present, banks or other digital platforms do not have any such system which can verify that the number being reported belongs to the same person. In such a situation, one may have to face the problem of fraud.
For example, if you want to create your account on a digital platform like Flipkart or Amazon, then for that you use the number of a member of your family. In such a situation, the platform does not know whether the number is actually registered in your name or not? In mobile number validation, fake account cannot be created by using any mobile number.
However, many people are also protesting about this. They believe that this can harm privacy. Cyber criminals will find some way or the other for this and can commit fraud. At the same time, it is being said that mobile number validation will be used while maintaining the privacy of the customers. This will benefit trust in digital transactions.
Preparation to curb cyber crime
Apart from this, the problem of buying second hand devices will also be eliminated in the new rules. In such a situation, fake and blacklisted devices sold in the market will not be purchased. Many people buy stolen or blacklisted mobile handsets at low prices. After the introduction of the new rule, stolen phones will not be sold in the market.
