cyber security rules
Cyber Security Rules: The Government of India has implemented new cyber security rules to deal with the increasing cyber crimes, which will now be applicable to telecom companies, finance sector and insurance companies. Under these rules, companies will have to protect customer data and immediately report any cyber incident to CERT-In. These rules aim to prevent cyber incidents such as fraud, ransomware and data breaches, thereby ensuring the safety of customers and businesses. These companies will now have to adopt strict cyber security measures to ensure the security of customer data.
Rules for sending SMS become stricter
Strict rules have also been imposed on commercial SMS sent by companies like banks and e-commerce sites, so that fake links and messages can be prevented. Now, even before sending SMS, any company will have to tell the telecom companies which link or number will be sent in their message, and why it will be sent. All companies will have to update their old SMS template within a certain time frame such as 60 days. If this is not done, their messages will not be sent. Such arrangements will be made to immediately identify fake links so that mobile networks will be able to immediately identify whether the link inserted in the message is real or fake. If it is dangerous or fake, the networks will be able to stop it immediately. Being applicable to more companies, these rules will now apply not only to telecom companies, but also to companies in the financial and insurance sectors.
TRAI has also made a provision for heavy penalty on those making fake or unwanted commercial calls/messages (Unsolicited Commercial Communication – UCC) and for repeated violations of the rules, a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh can be imposed. Especially for violations related to financial fraud (banking, loan etc.), the amount of fine can be Rs 2 lakh for the first violation, Rs 5 lakh for the second and Rs 10 lakh for subsequent violations.
What is the government’s second plan under cyber security rules?
The government plans to implement the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) system, after which you will now know who is calling. When a call comes on your mobile, not only the number but also the name of the caller will be visible. This will be similar to Truecaller, but this feature will be provided directly by the telecom companies. After this, it will be easy to identify the fraud calls and it will become very easy to identify the fraud calls coming from fake or unknown numbers, so that you can avoid picking them up.
Unknown numbers will be blocked and the government will also identify and block such numbers which are used for fraud.
What has become easy for the customers?
Now you can file a complaint about fake calls and messages within 7 days instead of 3 days and the time limit for taking action on your complaint has been reduced from 30 days to 5 days. These rules have been brought to make digital communication more secure and transparent, so that crores of mobile users can be protected from fraud.
