Mumbai: The city’s economic offences wing (EOW) police on Thursday arrested a 33-year-old dismissed CISF constable, Nilesh Rahtor, from New Delhi for allegedly cheating more than 60 people by promising them jobs in govt departments. While he collected between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 15 lakh from each of the job aspirant, cops say the total amount involved in the racket may cross Rs 10 crore.Rathor is from Akola district and would fly to different cities, stay in five-star hotels, and issue fake appointment letters and medical certificates to job aspirants, said the police. “He has produced two Marathi movies as well,” said a police officer.A team led by EOW head Nishith Mishra, DCP Nimit Goyal, and senior inspectors Nitin Patil and Sanjay Marathe is probing the case.After securing his transit remand, Rathor was produced before the Esplanade court on Saturday and was sent to police custody till Oct 14.The complainant, Navi Mumbai resident Santosh Kharpude (56), said Rathor promised to arrange a govt job for his daughter in the tax department. Rathor reportedly flaunted his connections with senior officials and bureaucrats in various departments and promised to arrange engineer, doctor, teacher, and other jobs in govt departments. He bought a 3BHK flat in New Delhi for Rs 1.5 crore, where he was staying with his wife and child. He bought a flat in Badlapur too and travelled in a chauffeur driven car costing Rs 30 lakh. He had employed a bodyguard too, police said.“He sold flowers in Pune in 2010 and 2011. The next year after clearing the exams he was inducted into the CISF as a constable, where he worked till 2021 in New Delhi. After he was found guilty in a cheating case, he was dismissed from the force. He then worked as a daily wage labourer and earned between Rs 700 and Rs 800,” said a police officer, adding, “Someone gave him the idea of cheating people for jobs.” He started posing as if he had connections with big people in govt departments and would pose as a central govt officer.Cases against him were registered with the Deccan police station in Pune, Akola, Vashi, Azad Maidan in Mumbai, and Sahar police station. Victims have given complaints against him in police stations at Nanded, Beed, Osmanabad, Akola, Sangli, and Satara too.EOW sources said they may summon the person related to the movies produced by the accused to find out how much money was paid to them. Police will also try to get the details about the total expenses and budget of the movies. Police said they will attach moveable and immovable properties owned by the accused. Investigators are also probing if more people were involved in the job scam.
