NPCI has issued a warning in view of the increasing cases of digital arrest. National Payments Corporation of India has issued a new advisory asking people to ignore calls coming from unknown numbers. These days, cyber criminals, posing as fake police, CBI, Income Tax and Custom officers, call people and cheat them by threatening them. NPCI has told people in its advisory what to do when receiving such calls?

What is advisory?

In its public advisory, NPCI has said that most of the scammers call people in the name of police, CBI etc. and threaten to take legal action. Such calls should be ignored and reported immediately. NPCI said that cyber criminals call and say that legal action will be taken against him or any member of his family. Most people get scared when they receive calls and become victims of cyber criminals.

NPCI said in its advisory that cyber criminals put logos of these agencies to look genuine so that people can trust them. With the help of AI, they keep noisy and office settings in the background so that people can easily listen to them. Not only this, in the name of fake police, CBI etc. they even threaten to arrest people immediately.

What to do when you get such a call?

NPCI said that there is no need to panic when such calls are received. No agency calls people. On receiving WhatsApp or other social media platform or text message, take a screenshot of it and report it on Sanchar Sathi portal. These screenshots will be useful to you while recording complaints etc. If you are not able to open the Sanchar Saathi app or website, you can register your complaint by calling the helpline number 1930.

NPCI has also said in its advisory that no government agency, police asks for money from anyone nor asks for bank transfer. In such a situation, if someone is harassing you by calling or messaging, then you can complain about it.
