Mumbai rains: Restored portion of DN Road washed away | Mumbai News

Maharashtra NewsMumbai rains: Restored portion of DN Road washed away | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The restored stretch of DN Road near Hutatma Chowk was washed away after the wet spell over the past few days.It may be recollected that this stretch of the road was shut for a prolonged period for Metro 3 underground works and was reopened after authorities restored it last year in April, only to be shut again in January when a portion of the road work was found unsatisfactory. MMRC directed the contractor to redo the road after noticing that an 80m stretch was slightly uneven. However, the current condition of the road was again found to be uneven, especially now in the wake of the ongoing rains. When the road was first opened in April, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) posted on its social media handle, “Road restoration work of southbound DN Road at Hutatma Chowk is now complete and has been opened for vehicular traffic. Opening of 390m long stretch in one go will help ease traffic congestion in this area.”With the Metro underground line up to Cuffe Parade set to be inaugurated soon by the Prime Minister, commuters and social media users on September 21 expressed shock at the quality of the work. Many said a restored road should have been resurfaced with lasting quality, which clearly was not the case. In a post on social media X, the handle @drifteternal_ posted, “Metro 3: “We have restored DN Road near Hutatma Chowk.” One rain and the “restoration” looks older than the heritage buildings around it.” The handle shared pictures of the road too. In response to it, other users pointed out how this road was restored at least two times. Meanwhile, the BMC has proposed large-scale concretisation of roads in South Mumbai in the coming fair season. TOI reached out to chief engineer (roads) Girish Nikam on whether this road was proposed to be concretised; however, no response was received. When contacted, Metro 3 authorities also did not comment on the issue.
