How to grow dragon fruit in a pot at home
Dragon fruit, also known as pitahaya or pitahaya, is a tropical fruit that comes from certain species of cactus. It is bright red or pink in appearance, with green bumps on its outer skin, which give it a dragon-like appearance. The pulp is usually white or red/pink in color, containing small, black seeds that are eaten. Its taste is mildly sweet and slightly sour, often compared to kiwi or pear. Dragon fruit is also considered very beneficial for health. In such a situation, some people want to grow it at home, but due to lack of knowledge about gardening, they are not able to grow it. In such a situation, here we are going to tell you about some easy tricks with the help of which you can easily grow it at home.
important things
pot
The dragon fruit plant grows like a vine and can get heavy, so choose a wide and deep pot at least 16-24 inches in diameter and 10-18 inches deep. It is very important to have holes at the bottom of the pot for drainage.
soil (potting mix)
The soil should be light, sandy and well drained, as it is a plant of the cactus family and does not like too much water. You can use a mixture of ordinary soil, sand and compost.
plant/cutting
It is best to use cuttings. Take a piece about 12 inches long from a healthy plant. Allow the cut end of the cutting to dry for a few days so that it hardens.
growing method
planting cuttings
Fill the prepared potting mix (soil) in the pot. Plant the cutting vertically in the soil at a depth of about 3-4 inches. Keep in mind that the cutting surface should be above the soil. Lightly press the soil around the cutting.
pour water
After planting the cuttings, water them with a spray pump or a light stream for the first time. After that, don’t water it too much. Water only when the soil feels completely dry.
Sunlight
Keep the pot at a place where it can get at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
care and support
give lift
The dragon fruit plant grows like a vine, so it needs support to grow. You can use a sturdy wooden stick, pole, or iron structure and tie the plant to it.
Fertilizer
Keep giving organic fertilizers from time to time for good growth and fruits.
pollination
Dragon fruit flowers bloom at night and often require hand pollination to set fruit, especially if you don’t have a pollinator. You may have to pollinate on the night the flowers bloom.
