Airtel-Google joined hands
Bharti Airtel-Google Partnership: Bharti Airtel, India’s second largest telecom company, has partnered with Google to launch Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging on its network in India. This new move is a major change for Airtel, as the Indian telecom company had previously refused to provide support for RCS in the country. The company had previously raised concerns about user spam through RCS messaging. With this new agreement, Airtel will launch RCS facility using Google’s platform. RCS works just like traditional SMS, but with better features and works over mobile data or Wi-Fi. With the latest update, all three major Indian telecom companies, Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea, now support RCS.
You will be able to do modern, fast and rich messaging through RCS instead of SMS.
If you use Airtel and have an Android smartphone, now you will be able to do more modern, faster and richer messaging through RCS instead of SMS. This means that apart from text, there can be features like better media sharing (photos, videos), group chat, read receipts, typing indicators, etc. The move is aimed at providing a better, network-accepted alternative to messaging platforms like WhatsApp.
Airtel and Google join hands again to launch RCS messaging
Airtel has joined hands with Google to offer RCS messaging service using Google’s platform on its network in India. Both the companies have agreed on 80:20 revenue sharing agreement. A report quoted industry officials as saying that Airtel will charge Rs 0.11 per RCS message under this agreement.
Airtel had earlier refused to partner with Google and Apple for RCS support. Airtel had also approached the telecom regulator to bring OTT communication apps under the ambit of anti-spam rules, citing concerns of potential spam through encrypted channels. Now, Google has agreed to integrate RCS with Airtel’s intelligent spam filters, making this a recent deal.
