Taking major action under the new Online Gaming Act, the government has blocked 242 online betting and gambling websites. Online betting and gambling was being conducted illegally on these websites. The government has passed this new Gaming Act only last year. So far, a total of more than 7800 illegal betting and gambling websites have been blocked.

Big action by government

Last year, the government had passed the Online Gaming Act, the purpose of which was to stop illegal betting and gambling. Many apps and websites including Dream 11, My 11 Circle, MPL had decided to stop real money prediction games on their platforms as soon as the Online Gaming Bill was introduced in Parliament. This is another major action taken by the government after the passing of the Gaming Act.

In view of the increasing online gambling addiction among the youth and people, the government had introduced the Online Gaming Bill in the House last year and later it was converted into the Online Gaming Act. Even before the Gaming Act was introduced, the government had taken action against about 1,400 illegal betting and gambling websites in 2022. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) continuously monitors such websites and apps where gambling and betting games are played illegally.

What is Online Gaming Act?

It is also called the Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Act 2025 as this bill has been passed last year. This Act was brought so that the addiction of betting and gambling growing among the youth and children can be curbed. There are many online real money games and apps available in the digital world that promote betting.

Under this Act, work is done to stop these illegal online betting gaming apps and websites, so that safe e-gaming can be promoted in India. No real money is exchanged in e-gaming and e-sports, while it solely works to improve the skills of children.

However, there are many such websites and apps that promote betting and gambling illegally under the guise of e-gaming or e-sports. Due to this Act, such websites and apps are banned.
