Grok Controversy: X has responded to the Indian Ministry of Information Technology’s notice regarding sexually objectionable deepfake videos of women and children from Grok. Last Friday, i.e. on January 2, the Government of India had issued a strict notice to the Elon Musk-led social media platform

The ministry had given extended time to the social media platform X, owned by American tech billionaire Elon Musk, to submit the ‘Action Taken Report’ (ATR) by 5 pm on Wednesday. Today, under this deadline, X has submitted its reply to the Ministry and sources have said that it is currently being investigated. However, the details of the information given by the company to the government were not immediately available.

X has submitted its reply to the Ministry of Information Technology which is now under investigation. According to sources, the investigation focuses on whether the platform has failed to stop users from creating sexually suggestive and obscene images of women and minors. Sources informed on Wednesday that the Ministry of Information Technology is investigating the response and action report given by social media platform ‘X’ following strict instructions from the government in the matter related to misuse of AI chatbot ‘Grok’ in creating objectionable content.

What warning did the government give to X?

The government had issued a strong warning to X, saying that using its Artificial Intelligence (AI) based tool ‘Grok’, photographs and videos of obscene, objectionable and sexual nature of women and minors were being created and shared. Keeping this in mind, the Ministry on January 2 had directed X to immediately remove all such illegal and obscene materials. The ministry, in its order, had also asked X to clarify within 72 hours what technical and organizational steps have been taken or are going to be taken with respect to the Grok app. In this matter, X’s Chief Compliance Officer was asked to provide information about the role and monitoring and action taken against infringing content, users and accounts.

According to sources, the ministry also underlined that Grok AI is being used to circulate pictures and videos of women in a derogatory and obscene manner by creating fake accounts. This shows a serious failure of the security measures of this platform. The government has made it clear that compliance with the Information Technology Act and its related rules is not optional and the ‘safe space’ exemption available under Section 79 depends only on compliance with strict ‘investigation’. In case of violation of rules, action can be taken against X under the IT Act and Indian Judicial Code.
