Telecom Department’s warning
The Department of Telecommunications i.e. DoT has issued a new warning for crores of mobile users of the country. On Monday, the Department of Telecommunications issued an official statement saying that misuse of a SIM card issued in someone’s name can send them to jail. According to the report, if the SIM card issued in the name of any user is used in any way for cyber fraud or other illegal activities, then legal action will be taken against them.

According to PTI report, the Department of Telecommunications advised and warned mobile users not to use their mobile number in any device whose IMEI number has been tampered. In a warning given to mobile users, the Department of Telecommunications said that if any user uses any device like modem, module, SIM box, whose IMEI number has been tampered, then he can be sentenced to jail.
The Department of Telecommunications advised the users to avoid using the SIM card issued in their name in any device whose IMEI number has been tampered. Such SIM card holders will also be considered involved in fraud. The Department of Telecommunications says that if a cyber crime is committed by using a SIM card issued in the name of a user in these devices, then action will be taken against the original user of the SIM card.
Advice given to users
Apart from this, the Department of Telecommunications has prohibited mobile users from using any third party apps or websites, which can modify the Calling Line Identity (CLI). According to the new Telecom Act 2023, provision for heavy fine and jail has been made in any such case. Those in whose name the SIM card is issued can be punished with a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh, imprisonment of up to 3 years or both.
The new Telecom Cyber Security Rules 2024 for IMEI tampering state that if anyone misuses or changes the IMEI i.e. International Mobile Equipment Identity, there is a provision of heavy fine and jail. The Department of Telecommunications has also advised users to verify the IMEI of their phones or other devices through the Sanchar Sathi app or portal.
