Navi Mumbai: Navi Mumbai-based India’s first Textile Recycling Facility (TRF) drew attention at the India Maritime Week-2025 Conference, which took place in Mumbai. The union ministry of textiles and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) presented an informative stall. The prime minister made a special appearance, and the union home minister inaugurated the initiative. The stall showcased the country’s first pilot project to combat textile waste, titled “Textile Value Chain by Managing Post Consumer Textile”. It aimed to recycle and reuse post-consumer textiles to protect the environment, said NMMC commissioner Kailas Shinde. The TRF at CBD Belapur collected, classified, and recycled textile waste instead of sending it to a municipal solid waste processing facility. The centre attracts enthusiastic cooperation from citizens, said deputy commissioner Smita Kale. It also exhibited sustainable products made by women artisans from post-consumer waste collected from housing societies. Shinde said the facility has empowered artisans and women from self-help groups. Over 200 women were given employment opportunities at the centre.
