Maharashtra government’s agreement with Starlink
Maharashtra Government Starlink Partnership: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced a partnership with Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd to set up satellite-based internet services. Thus, it becomes the first Indian state to formally partner with an American company. The government signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Starlink company. Starlink is a satellite-based internet service launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which provides high-speed internet even to remote areas.
“It is an honor for us that the company is coming to India and partnering with Maharashtra,” Devendra Fadnavis wrote on social media platform He also wrote that “It was wonderful to welcome Starlink Vice President Lauren Dreyer to Mumbai today.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said this makes Maharashtra the first state to collaborate with Starlink to establish satellite-based internet services for government institutions, rural communities and critical public infrastructure in ‘remote and deprived areas and aspirational districts’ like Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim and Dharashiv.
Elon Musk’s Starlink is one of the largest companies in the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) industry, with the largest number of communications satellites in the world. Starlink has received license and satellite authorization approval to provide telecommunication services in India. The company has also signed an agreement with UIDAI to use the Aadhaar-based system for customer verification. Starlink has opened its first office in India in Mumbai and is expected to start commercial services by December 2025.
CM Devendra Fadnavis said that with this historic decision, Maharashtra will lead India in satellite-enabled digital infrastructure. “This is a huge leap towards a future-ready Maharashtra and sets a benchmark for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India Mission at the grassroots level,” he said.
