Mumbai: Two men were arrested by Gamdevi police on Saturday for allegedly extorting Rs 1 lakh from the manager of a private bank after posing as detectives hired by her estranged husband to keep tabs on her.Police have recovered Rs 95,000 and have lodged an FIR against the two under BNS for impersonation, threats, stalking and extortion. According to the FIR, the banker got a WhatsApp call on Oct 17. The caller claimed her husband had hired him to keep tabs on her movements and demanded Rs 50,000 to not share the information he had collected. Fearing for her safety, the woman paid him through an app. But the next day, he sent details of her and her friend’s Aadhaar and PAN cards and driving licences, and demanded another Rs 50,000. Again, the banker paid up. On Oct 19, she received further threats demanding Rs 40,000 more. Realising that the blackmailer wasn’t going to let up, she filed an online complaint with the National Commission for Women and later approached Gamdevi police. Police tracked the digital trail to a bank account belonging to Devendra Gaonkar (36) of Mulund. The probe showed that he transferred a portion of the Rs 1 lakh to a bank account of Kalyan resident Mohsin Sheikh (36). Both were then arrested. Gaonkar was sent to judicial custody, while Sheikh was produced in court. Police are verifying if others were involved in the blackmail.
