Mumbai: Tata Power entered into multiple power purchase agreements (PPAs) in the past couple of weeks to bring renewable energy to Mumbai and ensure that peak power demand from city consumers, especially in the hot and sultry weather, is catered to, announced a senior official on Sunday. Tata Power has nearly 800,000 electricity consumers in the island city and suburbs. The peak power demand for Tata Power touched 1,000 MW on October 17 and has been almost the same in the past few days due to the rise in day temperature and increasing demand from electricity users. In one of the agreements signed on October 16, Tata Power signed a 25-year PPA with Acme Solar Holdings for a 50 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project. The project will combine solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), providing power at a tariff of Rs 4.43 per unit. “Additionally, the PPA includes a commitment to deliver four hours of peak-hour power to the city each month with 90% availability,” a senior official said.Tata Power signed another PPA with Juniper Green Energy Limited for a 70 MW FDRE project through its subsidiary, Juniper Green Sigma Eight. Located in Maharashtra, the project will feature 180 MWp of solar and wind capacity integrated with a 280 MWh battery energy storage system. In a third agreement, Tata Power signed a PPA with Tata Power Renewables to establish an 80 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project. The project, set to integrate advanced solar, wind, and battery storage systems, will generate 315 million units (MUs) of electricity annually, reducing over 0.25 million tons of CO₂ emissions each year, the official said.Upon commissioning, Tata Power Mumbai will meet peak-hour demand with firm and dispatchable renewable energy, supporting its customers across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. “This initiative aids Tata Power’s Mumbai distribution in fulfilling its Renewable Purchase Obligation, as mandated by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission,” the official added.Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, now boasts a total renewable utility capacity of 11.3 GW, including 9.4 GW under PPA. The operational capacity stands at 5.6 GW, comprising 4.6 GW solar and 1 GW wind. TPREL’s solar portfolio exceeds 15.7 GWp of ground-mount utility-scale and over 3 GW of rooftop and distributed ground-mounted systems. The company aims to provide energy access to millions across India through its integrated green energy solutions, a company spokesperson added.
