Thane: Holding that two Thane siblings’ clear and fearless testimonies proved his guilt beyond doubt, a sessions court convicted their father for attempting to murder their mother in 2019 and sentenced him to life term. The mother, who sustained 28 wounds, was unconscious for 40 days. One of the children also suffered injuries. Additional sessions judge G G Bhansali said granting leniency to the father, Pramod Kanha Patil, would undermine justice. On Oct 26, 2019, Patil attacked his wife, Vaijayanti, on the head and hands with a sickle. When younger son Pruthvi tried to save her, Patil slashed him, too. The elder son, Raj, sought help from neighbours. A private hospital’s doctors said the 28 wounds were life-threatening. Experts dismissed the defence’s claim that Vaijayanti fell on a utensil rack, noting that “no person can fall on sharp utensils 28 times”. —Nishikant Karlikar
